118 247.The worst Advert of 2009? *update*

This has to be the most god awful advert on tv at the moment. When there are such glorious treats as the mear cats to gander at during the five minutes between my stories this just looks painful. I imagine they made it on a liquid lunch break.

I think I hate it even more that Weeble have ripped off their own song and style to make money, can every one say sell out. I remember when they were cool. This is a sad day indeed.

Howdy folks, the names David, its lovely to meet you. I hope the weather is shinny where ever you are. There are a number of things I love to do with my day, writing here is one, writing for 69 magazine is another as well as delving my nose into a good book, listening to woman sing along to electro beats and playing computer games of all shapes and sizes. You are so wrong weebl stuff who made the ad are legends and have made some of the finest viral stuff on the net, your wrong.

and the meer cat thing is so lame, been done over and over again.
  • Blackett
    Thank you Stephen.

Weebl may have done some wonderful things in the past but this can not be described in any way shape or form as 'viral' first of all its roots are in broadcast media as an advertising campaign and is so obviously trying to be hip and cool when its really not. Its also aiming for the same market as those that would use 118 118 with a kooky young feel but there is no actual hook to it to cpature the imagination.

Compare the Meer cat, please give examples of this being done before. This is one of the few times where car insurance is being sold with out actually talking about the insurance itself, it is also getting a market interested and talking about car insurance (the magical 18-25 range) when they would normally just rely on their parents to deal with it.

I am sorry but this advert is wonderful, also please learn to spell awful rather than "aweful"
  • Blackett
Thank you for the spelling correction. If this is truly such a 'wonderful' advert can you explain to be why other than it just is.

AS IF! this is by far the best advert on tv, you are wrong! WRONG WRONG WRONG - so very wrong

Its a great advert one of those catchy if not annoying (ask my girlfriend hehe) tunes that you cant get out of your head and its great to make your own lyrics upto (again ask my very irritated girlfriend)
  • Wowers - looks like I'm flying in the face of mass public opinion too - Sheila's Wheels was clever and got in your head - Compare the MeerKat was an interesting diversion to sell insurence, this advert appears derivative (to be fair it's probably because so much of his other work is similar) and it isn't wonderful, it reminds me of a particularly irritating student project.

But as everyone seems to disagree then it's obviously not for me.

Another advertising exec way behind the times - Lions in Kenya was funny 8/9 years ago... ... ... ...

Wow. People really care about this advert. Personally I'm not all that keen.
My favourite advert of the moment is the Velvet toilet roll advert with the baby MD; its a simple idea which gives the product an instant branding image and character (regardless of if they keep changing the kid) and it doesn't try to be cool.
  • Lindiana
I have to agree with everyone else! It's catchy, gets in your head and makes use of a winning formula! Who can blame him for wanting to make a bit of money! Everyone sells out at some point, I guess being different and edgy and broke is only fun for a while...
  • Matthew Kelly
I think you mean the best advert of 2009.
    It's amazing!
Besides, I don't see you making a better advert.

  • Best? Really? And no you dont see me making a better one, but I would find it difficult to make a worse one.
  • Oran
    Fucxk this shit. Its siick

The Honda advert is great and builds on its established brand status, the 118247 advert is just catchy and sticks in your head which is probably what they were aiming for!!! Pointless making an advert that is a cinematic work of art if people forget it by the end of the ad break. For that reason alone the Weebls remake of Magical Trevor is a great advert and even if this did become cult status on the net a couple of years back it doesn't make it lame putting it out on TV and Radio now, not everyone spends all day on this damn internet and to the vast majority this advert is new.
  • Clearly im just not cool, I must be part of the minority like Chris Copes girlfriend that just find it irritating rather than memorable.

I also dont find it acceptable for advertisers to use ideas that have been popular online and pass it ona few years later as something new and cool, maybe this isnt the worst offender of this but its not helping the problem.

Another mentalist who doesn't think animators or artists should actually make any money. The business is hard enough as it is. It's the way they stay alive ffs. You don't call musicians or bands sell outs because they sell songs or get in the charts. It's quite possible for artists to have a commercial side without being 'sellouts'. You should look at it as broadening the tastes and horizons of the masses and helping the artists and animators who worked so hard to keep you amused for nothing for all those years. There's nothing wrong with getting some financial rewards after years of making bitter little geeks like you chortle in your skid smattered underpants.
  • Where have I said that I dont think animators should not make money, I think illustration, especially hand drawn illustration is a lost art that should be brought back. I think if you took the time to look around the site you would see how much we gush about cartoons, comics, graphic novels etc.

However that doesnt mean that this is a good advert and the fact that it its a copy their own work is a shame for a company that is known for being original and it comes a few years too late after Magical Trevor was talked about so actually has next to no pop culture relevance. And that is why I say they are sell outs, it has nothing to do with being on tv or making money.

    The song is lame.

GET LOST DIS IS DA BEST AD ON TV WOT DO YOU LIKE OPERA CRAP
  • Duncan Hill
"Dis"? "Da"? "Wot"? You wouldn't happen to be a chav, would you?

I think the 118 247 advert is supposed to appeal to the B3ta/YTMND/Somethingawful loser types, you know the 18-30 year old socially dysfunctional men who live with their mothers, and get off by bullying people in chatrooms. Unfortunately they all sit on the internet all day, so know all about free directory enquiries online. Additionally, 0800 100 100 is free directory enquiries, so why use 118 at all?
