Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Have you heard about the one with the visionary director, the new classic graphic novel and the geeky references? Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is like a socially intelligent relatively attractive geek with Zelda tourettes and ADHD. It is ‘totes’ awesome.

Before we get into this properly I have read the Graphic Novels but I subscribe to the different media is different rules. So won’t be comparing them, that, my friends would ridiculous. Saying that however, SPvTW is the closest thing to a living comic since the long forgotten ZZZAP on CITV in the 90s/00s. With the shwooshing, crashing ratio shifts and split screens this is as brilliant and original a kinetic aesthetic as Moulin Rouge. It is so compelling that after leaving the cinema I was annoyed that when I jumped things didn’t go slow motion or whoooooooosh BANG, so I obv. made the noises myself.

The story is that Scott falls for a strange girl and must defeat her seven evil exes. The story is well paced but I wanted certain elements of the romance to feel a little bit more powerful, it would make the end battle mean more but over all it’s cleverly and amusingly told. However, there was a lot in the film and I almost wanted a Deathly Hallows style two parter, there are storylines I really wanted expanding.

The characters are well drawn I had decided on a Scott in my head whilst reading the books but Cera does a wonderful job of Scott even if he is a little out played by Mr. Culkin with an understated but wonderful portrayal of Scott’s gay bedmate Wallace. The villains are villainous and perfectly comic book and sit brilliantly in the film

This film looks and sounds incredible, tiny single frame adjustments have been made and it is obvious that Edgar Wright really, really cared about sticking with a strong tone for the movie. He departs from the zoom, clink, zoom, crash, zoom, clunk we had in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz but there is an obvious Wright fingerprint on every frame, he understands and often panders to the geeks, adding little nudges and winks so that people in the know feel special. I doubt with even a second viewing I’ll catch them all.

The battles that Scott has to undertake are awesome Wright can really shoot a fight and everything (even if there is no blood or broken bones) has weight and heft a true skill in this CGI world.

Truth be told I just wanted more, I wish I loved this film as much as I want to. Perhaps I need a second viewing but right now it’s just shy of a five star film

Old bag chucks cat in wheelie bin

I’m still in shock about this. Some disgusting old cow in Coventry decides it would be a good idea to stroke a cat lovingly then toss it into a wheelie bin and shut the lid. 16 hours later the owners find the poor kitty and decide to watch their home CCTV back whereupon they find this:

And will she be prosecuted? Nope. Minor slap on the wrist from police and the hassle of having ITV camped outside her house for a bit.

Although it does make me smile again at the overly dramatic title sequence a la BrassEye.

A Film Review: Salt

I feel I should tell you from the outset that this originally started as a much longer review and I just found myself getting bored. So I started again.

What you need to know is:

Mrs Pitt is a believable hero in the film, strong and beautiful doing things no human should be able to do and all in the name of her country. If you loved Peirce Brosnan’s Bond you will be on board here.

Although there are twists and turns a plenty, you will probably work out the key points in the first twenty minutes or so.

This is a strong start to a franchise.

It is possibly the most xenophobic film I have seen and ends with Angelina Jolie declaring that she will destroy all Russians, because you know, Russians are evil.

It is only about an ninety minutes long, making it the perfect Orange Wednesday length.

This Week I Am Mostly Listening To: Rosanna

The amazing Popjustice recently set up a record label, or fronts a record label, or runs a subsidury of a record label. Which ever one it is, it means that they are hunting for glorious pop tunes to release on this land. This is a good thing.

This week sees their first release. Waterfall by Rosanna.

And the verdict is. AMAZING.

Well I say amazing, what I mean is. If you love Robyn and think that three albums from her this years isn’t enough and what you need in your life is a fantastic poptune that sounds like some one with a similar voice to Robyn singing a song that could be sung by Robyn then this is the tune for you.

If you want to decide for yourself listen below and just for kicks you can download a free remix of one of her tunes here.

Metroid Other M: Well Done NIntendo

Occasionally Nintendo make an awesome trailer that never actually make it to these shores.

This is one of those trailers.

However I am left wondering why Samus says prolapse.

Doctor Who Christmas Special cast announced

Digital Spy-ing is usually how I spend my lunchtime and it’s always nice when they lead with a Who story about how the final Doctor Who cast for Xmas has been announced.

Now, quite honestly I didn’t know who any of these people were. All I know is that Pooky is an excellent first name. I’d also obviously missed the announcement that Dumbledore and Katherine Jenkins are going to be in Who. Hmmmm. In my mind I’m imagining that she’ll be like The Diva from Fifth Element but more Welsh and less body-trumpet.

So enjoy. Personally I’m not all that excited about Christmas Who. Sacriledge! the other two will scream, but I was disappointed with the last series and especially as Sherlock showed us what Moffatt is really capable of. I liked Amy and I liked Matt Smith as the Doctor but it was just missing something. Narrative largely. Such a shame as we know that when he’s on fine form, Moffatt is incredible.

The Ting Tings: Hands

It seems that hands are the new black, Sia clapped her hands in her latest single and Little Boots was so fond of the appendage that she named her album after our five fingered friend (and lets not forget that Alanis Morissette was rather keen on putting them in her pockets or washing them clean). Now The Ting Tings are back and want in on some of this hand action with their new tune:

TTH by kevv2

Its rather joyful and a bit of a change from ‘We Started Nothing’, which can only be a good thing as it was almost three years ago. Lets just hope they don’t pull the same trick as last time and release some top notch singles and then a rather pedestrian album.

The Ting Tings came to visit us in Leicester one year, here is an al-right review of their show.

Hurts: An Awesome Band You Should Listen To

I love my pop tunes. A good pop tune has the ability to make you put your hands in the air like you just don’t care, equally a good pop tune can make you crawl into dark corner and cry like you have lost a puppy.

It is for both these reasons I have fallen in love with Hurts and their new album Happiness.  Now I am not too sure how much I can talk about the album due to the rules of embargo. But I think its safe to say that it is a rather dark romp exploring all the different types of heartache a man can go through using elctronicness and a lot of bass. It is absolutely fantastic and the first album this year I am happy to have on repeat over and over again.

This is their latest single, which is due out on Monday:

Marvellous I think you will agree. (The sexiest moment is at around 3minutes and 46 seconds, watch repeatedly)

Another thing I find fantastic about this band/group/duo is their unashamed love of all things pop. The inspiration from The Pet Shop Boys and the Lady Gagaesque dance routine are the most obvious. But when you delve a little deeper and look at who inspires them you find a long love affair with the British pop industry. Tone of Take That pop up in more than one song, which is a bit of an odd concept for me.

I am old enough to remember when Take That were popular the first time. At the time I was young enough to get swept up in the glory of them but  I was very aware that others viewed them as crass and cheesy. So for a modern band making such good tunes citing Take That as an influence is oddly refreshing and shows that beneath there serious (and rather sexy) venear there is a bundle of fun to be had.

I forgot to mention Kylie duets on one track, the review copy of the album I have heard features a Kylieless version of the song, I’m sure that the presence of Kylie will add 100% greatness to a track that is already pretty decent. (pr people please send me the Kylie version.)

In conclusion, you should love Hurts, if your not convinced at this moment in time then you must go and learn to love Hurts.

Olympic Cadbury and spiders

We like the Cadbury’s advertising quite a lot here at YourFace. Well, except the lazy rehashing of old ads with new music. That, we do not like.

So, I’m glad to see that they’re back on form with a beautiful looking ad where some sort of under-the-sea incomprehensible sport is being played between fishes and stuff with spots, and those with stripes. Just as well it’s fish really cos I’m honestly getting pretty sick of all the London 2012 gubbins. I think if it had been children or paralympians or montages of people running I’d have vomited.

Blackett may not be so fond of our arachnid friends, but personally I quite like them. This is my very favourite spider-related thing ever ever and brings back wonderful childhood memories. Please enjoy. For spiders are lovely. Snakes however…no thank you.

Sky Loves Spiders, I However Don’t

This is part of the marketing campaign for the new 3D service that Sky will be rolling out in the not so distant future. Yes I know that this isn’t 3D, but if you were to travel to Liverpool’s Bug World Experience then you would see it in all its screen popping or added depth glory.

I’m rather enjoying Sky’s approach to advertising 3D at the moment. On one hand they are going for the populist ’3D make films and sport much better to watch, we promise.’ Which of course they have to, being a commercial organisation. On the other they are trying to go for the cultural market too. This spider video is one of a family of films to educate people on how to get rid of their arachnophobia and is being shown as part of an exhibition and I have also spotted a rather nifty advert with ballerinas.  Wonderful job Sky, well done.

However I would also like to highlight that arachnophobia is a perfectly normal and rational fear and should actually be encouraged. When the inevitable day arrives when all spiders come from their webs to claim the earth as their own, it is only us brave and wise souls that have learned to fear these many legged beasts that will actually be prepared.
