The End Of Harold
The time has finally come for Harold to depart from Neighbours, after almost 30 years of being on and off our screens he is going to pop his clogs and be gone for ever. But that is not why I write this, oh no. Because if your a Neighbours viewer you wuold know this was inevitable as Harold has been travelling Australia for the last year popping back to Ramsey Street every now and again to save the day and last time he was back he dropped the bomb shell that he had cancer. The reason I write this is because of the wonderful response in Australia.
To celebrate the departure of a much loved character they are having a day of celebration, with tuba players making a procession through Sydney. How fantastic is that? And it shows me how cynical us Brits are, how much better would life be if we truly embraced the characters on our screens so that when they left we felt we wanted to share with others the fond memories and the joy and pain. Just imagine Dot Cotton day when all cigarettes would be free or when Tony Hutchinson finally leaves Hollyoaks all restaurants change their name to El Nosh. Oh the fun we would have. Instead all we get is a few tabloid rumours and then characters fade into obscurity.
What do you Faces think? How would you celebrate the leaving of a character in any programme, past or present? What fond memories do you have of Harold? Lets all share the love.
