Lost in Austen

Adaptation of the week!!!!! Its my new slot you see, and until 62 minutes ago, I wasn’t entirely sure what the bloody hell I was going to talk about.

Hurrah for the rather (read: very) gorgeous Jemima Roper (of As If fame) who plays Amanda Price, an Austen-phile who finds Pride and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennett dandering about her bathroom. You see, Elizabeth has stumbled through a magic door of some sort and leaped some hundred years into the future. We can all see what’s going to happen next, and it does. Amanda gets locked in 1811 (ish) and is forced to mingle with what she supposed were fictional characters. She also has a copy of Pride and Prejudice with her, which is handy as there are so many people in this book, you sort of lose track.

And speaking of people, I’m always one to judge a programme by the amount of hot ladies within, so it was a nice surprise that Alex Kingston (squeeeeeeeee River Song) is playing Mrs Bennett.

As this is only an hour long, and we’ve not quite gotten to the end yet, I’m guessing that Amanda just ensures that Elizabeth gets back from the future in time for their grand ball where she first meets the eponymous Mr Darcy. But uh oh. Amanda is so damn lovely and modern that all the men are falling for her. Gracious!

Its brilliant Wednesday-night fluff and a valiant attempt by ITV to try and force their viewing population to put down the fork and pick up a book. I’m never entirely sure that I like that though. I enjoy my literary snobbery and don’t usually enjoy the mass consumerization of an art-form. Hmmm. Otherwise, its a harmless and charming adaptation; flawed in many ways, but serves the purposes of entertainment. Oh and there’s a moment when Alex Kingston has very arousing fight with Jemima. Mmmmm.

Ponderings?
