Tonightly or And you thought the 11 O’Clock show was bad…
Well. I’ve endured 3 episodes of this ‘Generation Next‘ comedy programme, I’ve yet to giggle, and I giggle at lots, funny stuff, shiny stuff, people falling over, mild insensitive racism and fat kids, but not at this, not once.
I figured that Iain Lee was the smuggest a smugg twat could get, I was wrong, whilst Jason Manford is still a ‘new face’ on TV comedy he isn’t on the circuit and, while not my taste, he is very good. He obviously thinks he is much better than everyone else and treads on their punchlines like a clumsy drunk tit. Oh, and he’s as smug as a californian driving a hybrid car to a muncipal compost heap with 4 underprivileged foster kids. I didn’t think it was possible but I prefered Iain Lee.
One of the magical saving graces of The 11 O’clock show was the manificent and beautiful Daisy Donovan who managed to get laughs through the smugness and was the only reason I watched the show. The replacement for her is the beautifly turned out Andi Osho who it seems writes some good material but as soon as it leaves her lovey lips Mr Manford tries to top it like a playground show off and makes her look much much worse than she is.
Then the special guests and characters. I’d rather not give names as it means they’d show up in a google search. They’re not good, there are far superior people on youtube or funny or die and how a sketch that just required the constant yelling of ‘Cock Suckers’ got in proves the lack of talent and originality.
I gave this show a few episodes hoping it would grow into itself and be our version of The Daily Show or the Colbert Report. It isn’t, it really isn’t and I hope it’s just because there’s not much news at the moment, but it turns out not to be so, one of my friends told me a news story that they covered and I laughed more at the way my friend told it and he’s an illustrator not a writer.
The problem is that we need this programme, it’s not a panel show and it doesn’t involve one main celebrity, (I’m looking at you Alan). I just wish it didn’t go for the easy laugh and instead went for good writing, when the Sunday Night Project does your whole show in five minutes and funnier then you’re doing it wrong, very wrong.
It makes me sad. Where did the funny Channel 4 go, I want it back, so I can be on it.
