Sex And The City: The Movie. Review.

The premise of the series is pretty much all that happens here, the four girls that some people have grown to love (others have grown to hate and despise) have good relationships then they go wrong and then they go write again. Think a whole series condensed into two hours and you pay the privilege of being forced to sit in the dark with a group of strangers that insist on talking. But how well does Sex and the City work in the cinema.

Follow me after the post break and you can get to read my wonderful opinion.

Basically if you don’t like SATC by the time you go and see this film it is not going to convert you to the cause. But for those who do love the series it presses all the right buttons. Every one is dressed in beautiful clothes, every one looks beautiful all the time (except Big but I will get to that in a bit) and there seems to be constant soap opera drama which kept the pretty much all female audience gasping and cheering at all the right points. And I must say I enjoyed it, and I have no shame saying that. However…..

The story is dire and feels incredibly contrived, at the end of the series every one was hunky dory and happy and a good film that does not make so very quickly made into emotional wrecks, well apart from Charlotte who manages to stay in a bubble of perfect wedded bliss through out. Which of course is fine as long as just before the bad things happen, Big breaking things off with Carrie for example, they had sign posted how it was all going to be fixed, Carrie pretty much pointed at the book of poetry with a neon finger and mouthed ‘this is important’ as she read from it. And in the last 10minutes some one did decide to press the big ol reset button and make it as though nothing had actually happened in the film as every one ended up pretty much where they started.

That’s my biggest problem with this is that I pay good money for something that normally I get for free and getting no bang for my buck. I love SATC as much as the next stereotype and this is the moment they could have done something massive and big and grabbed the story monster by the balls and killed off one of the girls, and had Carrie have the most perfect wedding for gods sake have Charlotte become a junkie! There is so much you can get away with on film that you cant in a programme that gets beamed into the house, they even dulled down on the sex, the one element of the programme that got me hooked right at the beginning was taken away from me, apart from one willy shot and a pair of fake boobs, I wanted to perv! Why would they take that away from me.

Then there is Big, people seem to like to make fun of Sarah Jessica Parker and say she looks like a foot or a horse, but apart from her midget height I don’t think she looks like a beast at all and she has a look about her that means she can pull off weird clothes like no one else can. However why Big? He looks like a walking pterodactyl and has no chemistry with any one, not even the scenery and I cant understand why he has hung around this long, this could have been a chance to get a new love interest. Or they could have got married and then he could have died and that would have been AMAZING.

So in conclusion, this is a series condensed, nothing exciting really happens, but every one looks pretty if not alot older ( Smith looks the worst, oh how the beautiful fall). If you love SATC you will not be disappointed if you don’t you will be.

oh yes completely forgot right at the start of the film there is about 15minutes of exposition about what has happened up to now, my problem with this is two fold, first being that this film is for those who loved the series so surely they will know exactly what has happened befor and second its just really lazy story telling.

I agree about the exposition at the start. It was like those Chris Claremont X-men comics where they all start in the Danger Room describing eachother’s origins and powers at the top of their lungs.

Good film though. 4 stars. It wasn’t amazing but it acted as a nice filler between Iron Man and Dark Knight.

Some one going by the name enigmatic2 sent me a message about this post, dont know why he didnt say it here, bu any who thought I would copy and paste.

I don’t think it’s that funny. Some of it I agree with, but overall I thought it was a brilliant film.

I got the impression that whoever wrote it just wanted to slate it, and they didn’t even do it in a clever, well written way. They just insulted people and said they look old, as though it wasn’t expected after 10 years of the original series starting.

    Blimey…

I think that is the oddest way to describe sex and the city, as a filler between Iron Man and Dark Knight. You have been missed around these parts Andy welcome back.

For some reason the site isn’t even letting me post proper comments! Boo!

But, comments emailed to you Blackett? Yawn. Just post it people, we’ll only moderate it out if its offensive to us, not if you disagree. Sigh.

I blame my absence on Dead Rising for the X-box 360. It basically concerns running around a mall, shoplifting clothes, and killing zombies. With katanas.

I find it difficult to focus my attention on anything that doesn’t allow me to leap onto a crowd of zombies in an ill-fitting summer dress and fiercely vent the pressure from their brains with a well placed metal shower head to the cranium.

  6. Blackett says:

I got that lost comment in my emails and I thought WTF how on earth has that got anything to do with sex and the city, or was a watching a far less version of the film.

Dead rising is one of the reasons im getting a 360, really feel the need to beat the crap out of zombies with a cricket bat.

It’s all about the sickle. A quick tap of the X button and off pop their heads.

  8. Blackett says:

I will remember that, although will just be tapping that button thinking how awesome it would be if i was swiping the wiimote from side to side.
